What can we practically do?
This Ted-talk suggests practical ways to help build self-esteem. Niko Evertt was founder of Girls for Change, an organization dedicated to empowering girls.
4 steps educators can take
- Help our students "meet themselves" and teach them to think positive thoughts about themselves
- Emphasize learning goals of mastery and growth, instead of demonstrating self-worth.
- Realize that self-esteem may not mean the same thing for everyone and many factors influence self-esteem including race, socioeconomic status, gender, and ability level
- Increase students' awareness of self, which also increases their empathy and other levels of understanding
